31 Injured and 13 Fatalities Result From Palm Springs Area Freeway Crash Involving Big Rig and Passenger Bus
Palm Springs CA Freeway Accident Leaves 13 Dead 31 Injured – The worst freeway crash in decades left 13 dead, and 31 injured on the Interstate 10 Freeway in Palm Springs, California Sunday morning when the USA Holiday passenger bus rear ended a big rig trailer on the way to Los Angeles. The bus was returning from an overnight trip to the Red Earth Casino near the Salton Sea. The bus passengers were transported to local trauma centers and hospitals. The bus driver was killed in the collision, and the truck driver survived with minor injuries.
The bus was a 1996 vehicle without seat belts. There were 43 passengers on board the bus. The 31 victims who suffered injuries from the bus crash all suffered facial injuries and other soft tissue injuries consistent with not wearing a seat belt.
The major freeway accident shut down the 10 freeway until 4:00 Sunday at Indian Canyon, and gridlock stretched back to the Gene Autry exit. The deceased victims were placed in white body bags and placed along the side of the freeway as the cleanup crew and California Highway Patrol first responders waited for the Riverside County Coroner vans to take them away two at a time. The families of the victims arrived to the area throughout the day, going from hospital to the morgue searching for their injured or deceased loved ones. The organization of the traumatic event was a concern due to the number of victims and confusion of the crash site. Purses, backpacks and seats were scattered outside the bus on the roadway.
The USA Holiday tour bus bus plowed 15 feet into the back of the trucks trailer. The bus was going fast when it rear-ended the truck. The CHP had been slowing traffic for hours preceding the accident, because electric wires had fallen across the freeway. Fatal traffic investigators are still searching for evidence to determine the cause of the multi-victim fatal bus crash. They do not yet know if the driver fell asleep, had a heart attack, or was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A press conference is scheduled for today at 1:00 p.m., according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
